United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has thanked the government of the State of Qatar for hosting the meeting of the special envoys on Afghanistan.

“Let me thank the government of Qatar for the exemplary hospitality. I have come to Doha to convene a meeting of special envoy of Afghanistan for frank and constructive exchange of views. I am pleased we are able to enter this meeting with unanimous Security Council resolution 2681 of 27 April calling for full, equal, meaningful and safe participation of women and girls in Afghanistan,” Guterres said in a statement.

He said participants agreed on the need for a strategy of engagement that allows for the stabilization of Afghanistan but also allows for addressing important concerns.

The participants are worried about the stability of Afghanistan and have

expressed serious concerns over the matter.

Qatar hosted the closed-door two-day meeting of special envoys on Afghanistan, which was chaired by Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres from May 1-2.

During the meeting, ways to enhance stability and multilateral action in Afghanistan were discussed, as well as challenges facing humanitarian work and impeding aid from reaching the Afghan people.

Qatar’s hosting of this meeting stems from its supportive position of Afghanistan, and the emphasis on the importance of dialogue to achieve the aspirations of the Afghan people for a decent life, progress and prosperity, and to preserve the rights of minorities, especially women.
